Palestine, Relocation, Albania?

Belgrade, February 4, 2024 – The Asylum Protection Center participated in RTS Morning Program alongside representatives from the Institute for European Studies, discussing U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative to relocate Palestinians to Arab countries in the region, and even to Albania. According to reports from Israeli media, in addition to Egypt and Jordan, Palestinians from Gaza are also expected to be resettled in Albania under Trump’s plans. However, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has explicitly opposed this initiative, stating that Albania will not accept displaced Palestinians.

During the program, the Center highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where a significant portion of the population is unable to secure even minimal living conditions necessary for survival. It also addressed the devastating effects of the ongoing armed conflict, which has resulted in the deaths of over 47,000 people, more than 70% of whom were women and children, while over 111,000 people from Gaza have been injured.

A particular focus was placed on the Albania developing country’s precedent in taking on the burden of refugee and migration responsibilities instead of a developed country like Italy. Concerns were raised about the possibility of this model becoming a blueprint for other developed nations seeking to evade their international obligations under the Refugee Convention by outsourcing the reception of refugees arriving on their territory.
