BERLIN, August 18 – Germany will be returning migrants to Greece who previously sought asylum in the Mediterranean country, provided an agreement between the two nations. (English version below)
An agreement with Greece, is another step, according to Germany officials, towards a more orderly migration policy in Europe.
Last week, Germany reached a similar agreement on the return of migrants to Spain, following the dispute over asylum policy.
The Greek agreement, like the one with Spain, allows Germany to return migrants who have entered the country across the border with Austria to Greece within 48 hours.
Germany has, by this agreement, committed itself, in turn, to resolve backlogs of family reunification by the end of the year, and to reconsider the controversial cases.
Germany is also negotiating with the Italian government and believes that it will achieve a similar agreement.
The agreement will most likely not affect a large number of migrants.
Data from the German Ministry of the Interior show that since mid-June, about 150 people who have already sought asylum in an EU country have entered Germany across the border with Austria.
More than 1.6 million migrants have entered Germany since the middle of 2014.
